FCT NLC suspends strike, directs teachers to resume Wednesday

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has suspended its indefinite strike, directing affected workers, particularly primary and secondary school teachers, to resume work on Wednesday.

FCT NLC Chairman Knabayi Adalo announced the suspension in a communiqué issued in Abuja on Tuesday, following conciliatory talks involving the union, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Adalo said the decision followed agreements on teachers’ career progression, promotion examinations and the deployment of officers benefiting from the harmonised retirement age for teachers.

He said promotion vacancies for education officers would be based on established positions declared by the FCT Education Secretariat, while a new date would be announced for the 2025 promotion examination.

The stakeholders also agreed to suspend further deployment of eligible officers back into classrooms until further notice, in line with an existing FCT Executive Council directive.

Adalo said the union would establish a monitoring committee to ensure the agreements were implemented within specified timelines.

He warned that failure by the FCTA or relevant authorities to honour the agreements would trigger an automatic resumption of the strike without prior notice.

The NLC chairman added that workers who participated in the strike would not face reprisals, penalties or victimisation.

The union began the indefinite strike on October 7 over unresolved labour disputes and policy concerns affecting teachers and other FCT workers.
