The Ogun State government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, over alleged partisan political activities pending an investigation.
The suspension was approved by the State Executive Council under Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021.
A letter dated October 20 and signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, said the decision followed complaints about the monarch’s alleged involvement in partisan politics.
The government said such activities violated customary law and statutory provisions and could undermine the traditional institution and peaceful coexistence among residents with different political affiliations.
Under the suspension, Akinyemi was directed to vacate the palace and refrain from entering it. He was also prohibited from wearing or using his crown, beaded staff and other symbols of the office.
The monarch was further directed to make himself available for any government investigation into the allegations.
