Africa CDC seeks urgent global support after Ebola case in Nigeria

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has called for urgent international support for Nigeria following the confirmation of an Ebola Bundibugyo case.

The agency’s Director-General, Jean Kaseya, made the appeal on Tuesday through the agency’s official X account, urging partners to provide emergency funding, medical supplies, diagnostic equipment and trained responders.

Kaseya said the appeal followed a discussion with Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, who informed him of the confirmed case.

He commended Pate for promptly reporting the case, stressing that early notification was essential to saving lives and strengthening outbreak response.

“My appeal to the international community is urgent: ACT NOW,” Kaseya said, warning that delays could cost lives and allow the outbreak to spread to more countries.

He said Africa CDC was mobilising support for Nigeria while strengthening response efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya and maintaining heightened vigilance in Uganda.

Kaseya also called for stronger community-based surveillance and coordinated international action to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
