IPAC rejects appointment of sole administrators in Kebbi LGs

The Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC), Kebbi State Chapter, has criticized the continued appointment of sole administrators in the 21 local government councils of the state.

Chairman of IPAC, Ibrahim Mohammed, addressing state assembly members, expressed concern over the non-conduct of elections in the state local governments, calling it a moral challenge to the state government.

Mohammed emphasized that the tenure of elected council chairmen is two years, and it is expected that after their tenure expires, the state government should conduct another election, as elections are a crucial element of democracy.

The tenure of the Kebbi State Council chairmen expired on February 5 this year, and sole administrators were sworn in on March 5.

Responding, the House Speaker, Muhammed Usman Zuru, cited Section 9 of the 2008 local government law of the state, which empowers the Governor to appoint sole administrators within a period of nine months. He explained that the governor may conduct an election within the first three months, and if the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission (KESIEC) is not ready, he may shift it for another three months, with the power to shift it for another three months, making a total of nine months.
