Tiwa Savage Spills the Tea: Why I Made “Water and Garri”

Tiwa Savage, the Nigerian singer, says she produced ‘Water and Garri’, her debut film, to portray Africa positively. Savage spoke to CNN’s Larry Madowo on the latest episode of African Voices Changemakers. The 44-year-old songstress said she produced the film to tell African stories through the female perspective.

“I think it is important for people to see Africa and see film being interpreted from a female point of view as well,”

she said.

“I love the story and I think it is gonna draw a lot of people back to Africa in a different way.

“I think we have seen a lot of negative light on Africa for so many years and decades and it is with the way Afrobeats music is going, I think film is catching up to that too.

“So, it is very very important for us to tell our own story.”

Directed by Meji Alabi, ‘Water and Garri’ premiered on Prime Video on May 10. The film tells the story of Aisha, an ambitious fashion designer, who returned to her native country — following the loss of a family member — after being away for 10 years in the United States.

She had to learn to live with her scars and confront the guilt she left behind while reconnecting with family, old friends, and her past love. The movie features several movie stars including Jemima Osunde, Mike Afolarin, and Andrew Bunting.
