Two brothers, Tony Christopher, 28, and Sunday Christopher, 24, were arraigned on Wednesday before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating their landlord over unpaid rent.
The defendants, both residents of Janruwa, Kaduna, are charged with conspiracy and assault.
The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendants committed the offences at their residence on September 19.
According to Leo, the defendants beat up the complainant, Joseph Gandu, during a dispute over unpaid rent.
He stated that in the process, the complainant sustained injuries on his face and arms.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened sections 58 and 240 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
Section 240 stipulates a three-year jail term for assault and causing bodily harm.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, ruling on the bail application of the defendants, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Emmanuel said the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government, and their addresses must be verified by the court prosecutor.
He adjourned the case until October 20 for hearing.
