Tinubu nominates four national INEC commissioners, two RECs

President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners to fill vacancies at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced this in a statement on Friday, adding that the Senate would scrutinise the nominees.

Tinubu reappointed Bala Bila as the national commissioner representing the North-East.

Mustapha Aliu was nominated to replace Abdullahi Zuru as the North-West representative, while Bashir Muhammed Umar was nominated to replace Muhammad Adamu as the North-Central representative.

The president also nominated Oluwatoyin Babalola, the resident electoral commissioner in Osun State, as the South-West national commissioner. She will replace Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24.

The two nominees for resident electoral commissioner positions are retired permanent secretary Samuel Akinjide Akinleye for Ekiti State and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State. Sanusi will replace Saidu Ahmed Babura.

Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process ahead of the general elections scheduled for January 2027.
