Super Eagles: Finidi reveals positions local players can compete with Euro stars

Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has said local-based players can compete favourably in defence and midfield with their Europe-based counterparts.

Finidi also hinted that players plying their trade in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, would be allowed to fight for a place in the team.

“We have a lot of good strikers who are doing well in Europe, week in, week out. So, I believe players from the league can hold their own in midfield and defence,” the former Enyimba coach said during his media tour.

Only one local star, Olorunleke Ojo, was included in the Super Eagles squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The 53-year-old is expected to release his list for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic before the end of this week.

The Super Eagles are slated to face South Africa and Benin Republic next month.
