Gawuna returns to Kano after Supreme Court verdict

A crowd of supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Sunday welcomed the party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, in Kano.

Daily Trust reports that the event marked Gawuna’s first visit to Kano since he left office as deputy governor. The development also came barely two months after the Supreme Court verdict on the Kano State governorship dispute.

Recall that Gawuna was defeated by the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the polls.

But he filed a petition at the election petition tribunal which gave him victory. Governor Yusuf, who was not satisfied with the judgment of the tribunal, filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal where Gawuna again defeated him.

But the Supreme Court in its judgement in January 2024 reversed the decision of the two lower courts and declared Governor Kabir Yusuf as winner of the March 2023 governorship election in the state.

Our correspondent reports that Gawuna didn’t visit Kano until yesterday, a development that triggered a warm and massive reception.

Recall that the APC national chairman, Dr  Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, had visited the state and met with party stakeholders shortly after the Supreme Court verdict, but Gawuna never did.

It was gathered that a large crowd of supporters accompanied Gawuna from the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) to his residence at Miller Road.

A source close to him told our correspondent that he was in Kano to interact with family members and friends and appreciate party supporters among others.
