Why Kano can’t pay workers consolidated wages – Ganduje

Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has explained why the state government could not pay the consolidated wages to workers for March.
He said the consolidated wages for March was not feasible because there was a drop in the statutory allocation.
He added the state needs “additional billions of naira” which is currently not available.
The Governor spoke in a statement by Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba.
Ganduje was reacting to threats by labour union to embark on strike if the state fails to pay the consolidated wages in the next one month.
He pleaded with the union to shelve the proposed strike.
The Governor noted against all odds, he has never dithered in the payment of workers’ salary since inception administration.

He however, emphasised that given the present financial situation, it would be difficult to implement the consolidated salary for March, disclosing the situation was temporal.
“The drop in federal allocation for the period under review has made it difficult for the government to implement the new salary package.
“The Kano state government received a total allocation of N12.4 billion from the federation account, out of which the state collected N6.1 billion while the 44 local governments collected the sum of N6.3 billion.
“For the state government to pay the consolidated wages to its workers, it needs additional billions of naira which is currently not available.
“Labour ought to have reasoned with the government because embarking on strike won’t in any way solve the problem,” the Governor said.
He assured workers they would continue to receive the new package as soon as the situation improves.
