Voter register not destroyed in Kano fire, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the Voter Register and other sensitive documents were not destroyed in the in the fire that engulfed its Kano State Office yesterday morning.

A statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, reads: “Fortunately, all data in the voter register and other sensitive documents are backed up offsite and therefore safe. They will be recovered swiftly.

“On April 20, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Riskuwa Shehu, reported a fire incident at the Data Processing Centre (DPC) inside the premises of the commission’s state office.

“Items burnt include industrial printers used for the printing of the voter register, laser jet printers, dell and blade servers, desktop computers, laptops for training, inverters and other accessories and fittings.

“We assure the people that this incident will not affect our operations in any way. Investigation has begun and measures will be put in place to avert a recurrence.”

Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR) will resume on April 28, it was also learnt yesterday.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kwara State Garba Attahiru-Madami, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said those eligible to register are Nigerians who are 18 years and above and have not been registered before, those who wish to transfer their voting units to other locations, and those whose Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC) were damaged.
