Shoprite to cease operations in Kano Jan.

The Shoprite Mall has announced that it will close its Kano State branch on January 14, 2024.

The mall justified its decision on budgetary limitations and the significant expenses associated with conducting business in the country.

The announcement came after Jumia Food made a similar decision to stop operating in Nigeria by the end of the month, citing worsening financial circumstances.

The circular apologised for the change and said that it was a necessary but unfortunate decision.

It further stated that upon the closure of the mall’s operations in the state, all of the current staff would be let go.

“I regret to inform you that, as of January 14, 2024, our store in the Ado Bayero Mall in Kano will be closing. We considered the potential effects this choice may have on our workers and the community before making it.

“However, after careful consideration of the store’s financial situation and the current business climate, we believe it is the best course of action for our organization’s long-term growth.”

The store also announced intentions to open more locations across the country.

Additionally, it was stated that the Kano employees will be able to apply for jobs in these new locations.

“We recognize that it could be challenging to process this news. We want to reassure you that we are here to support you during this time of change, that your welfare is our first concern. We will also use every resource at our disposal to help you locate new opportunities inside our organization and we encourage you to apply for any vacant position in our existing stores across the country through the Human Resources department,” the statement added.
