Residents jubilate as FG flags off Port Harcourt-Aba rail

Residents living along the Port Harcourt-Aba rail corridor have expressed their joy as rail operations commenced Tuesday.

A trader in Aba, Abia state capital, Mr. Obinna Okwori, said the trains becoming operational will enhance his business.

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali, on Tuesday flagged off operations on the Port Harcourt-Aba rail line. This development comes after two previous unsuccessful attempts to commence operations on the line.

Addressing the people, including prominent traditional rulers from Rivers State, Alkali highlighted the importance of the rail line’s operation in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential priority areas. He emphasised the role of enhanced infrastructure and transportation in driving economic growth.

“The commencement of operations on the Port-Harcourt to Aba stretch is a significant step forward. The project, awarded to Messrs China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) in October 2020, involves the rehabilitation of existing narrow gauge railway lines, construction of modern stations, and procurement of new rolling stock,” he said.

Alkali further explained that the rail line would link key ports such as Onne, Bonny, and Port-Harcourt, facilitating the efficient transportation of goods and freight through the eastern corridor.

He added, “The commencement of operations on this section of the project aims to boost economic activities between the South South and South East regions. We remain committed to driving the contractor towards the speedy completion and delivery of the Aba-Enugu stretch; further enhancing connectivity and economic growth in the region.”
