Project Alert recently held refresher training for its army of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence community surveillance teams across Lagos, as part of its Spotlight Initiative Project.

The two-day training, which coincided with the globally celebrated International Women’s Day, was held at Knightsbridge Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos and had volunteers from Ikorodu, Agege, Alimosho, Koshofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Surulere, Yaba,  amongst others in attendance.

Executive Director, Project Alert, Josephine Effah-Chukwuma said the outreach was aimed at refreshing the mind of members generally on SGBV and response steps.

The main facilitator, Dr. Princess Olufemi-Kayode took members through the various forms of SGBV and the support services available to survivors.

Condemning female genital mutilation, Olufemi-Kayode, said it has been proven that the harmful practice, aside denying women the joy in sex, also causes prolonged labour, which is a major factor in the high maternal mortality rate.

Elsewhere in Ojodu, CLEEN Foundation commemorated the International Women’s Day with the #Choosetochallenge theme aimed at challenging the societal norm that hampers the growth of women and girls globally.

Head of CLEEN Foundation Lagos Office, Blessing Abiri, said the programme was to draw attention to the spike in sexual and domestic violence, which came with COVID-19 lockdown and deliberate on how to stem it out.

A community leader of Akinsanya Street in Ojodu, Prince Emmanuel Ajewole, said his takeaway from the event was the fact that society must come together to fight against women and girls abuse, as well as protect their right to education and equal opportunities.
