‘Police refuse to vacate Eko Club premises despite court order’


The President of Eko Club, Alhaji Tajudeen Jaye-Agoro, has said the police have refused to vacate the premises of the club in Surulere, Lagos despite a February 25 court order.

Jaye-Agoro, in a statement yesterday, urged the Lagos State Police Commissioner (CP) Hakeem Odumosu, to order his men to vacate the premises the club.

The statement said: “We are calling on the police to vacate the premises of Eko Club and respect the rule of law because members of the club are law-abiding citizens with respect for the rule of law.”

Justice O. Oyekan-Abdullai of the Lagos High Court, Igbosere on February 25 ordered Odumosu to direct his officers and men stationed on the premises of Eko Club, Surulere to vacate the place.

The judge gave the order while ruling on a motion ex-parte dated February 24 and filed on February 25. The suit was filed by the Incorporated Trustees of Eko Club, the claimant.

Listed as the first and second respondents are Chief Babatunde Rasheed Fanimokun and Odumosu.

Justice Oyekan-Abdullai held: “Upon this motion ex-parte dated 24th day of February 2021 and filed on the 25th day of February, praying for the following: An interim mandatory order directing the second respondent (commissioner of police) along with his police officers stationed on the claimant’s premises at Eko Club Close, off Bode Thomas Road, Surulere, Lagos State to vacate the premises forthwith pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed herewith.

“An interim mandatory order directing that the claimant be at liberty to re-enter and take possession of his premises at Eko Club Close, off Bode Thomas Road, Surulere, Lagos State, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed herewith.

“An order directing that any interim order herein be served on the respondents along with the originating process and motion on notice already filed. And for such further order as this honourable court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of this case.

The judge ordered that there must be no re-occurrence of a social club being stormed by the police in Lagos State.

The motion on notice has been adjourned till March 10 for hearing.
