Parliamentary support group calls for essays on Nigerian governance system

The Parliamentary System Support Group (PSSG) has invited vibrant youths in Nigeria to engage in a scholarly examination of the country’s governance system.

A document released by its committee on the national essay competition said the initiative seeks to explore the potential shift from the current presidential to a home-grown parliamentary system, aiming to foster a deeper understanding among young Nigerians of the structures that underpin democratic processes and governance efficiency in Nigeria.

The committee said the essay is open globally to all Nigerian students in any tertiary institution and participants currently enrolled in tertiary institutions.

“As Nigeria marks 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the assertion that a home-grown parliamentary system of government is the best alternative to the current presidential system in Nigeria has been the subject of very many commentaries.

“Proponents of the parliamentary system argue that the system promotes inclusivity, effective representation and accountability of all which are essential for economic stability and progress,” the document read in part.

Participants according to the committee would discuss the subject matter while the essay would “be evaluated based on originality, relevance to the theme, depth of analysis and clarity of expression.”

It said, “Finalist will be invited to present their essays at a public forum where they will be defend their viewpoints before a live audience and a panel of judges.”
