‘Monarchs deserve constitutional roles’

By Augustine Okezie, Katsina

Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari has called for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution  (as amended) to accommodate clearly-defined roles for traditional rulers.

Masari, who made the call during a monitored radio personality programme in Kaduna, said that the constitutional amendment would also provide an enabling role for traditional rulers to act promptly in the area of governance and complementing security arrangements.

Governor Masari further observed that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) did not recognise traditional rulers despite their leadership role as custodians of the traditions of the people.

He said: “The state government has already amended the local government law to provide for community policing with traditional rulers fully empowered to lead security committees.”

Masari also declared support for the formation of state police as one of the steps to address the issue of security challenges in the country.
