Weyenmi Oketie, an environmental activist and clean energy campaigner, says Lagos State produces more plastic waste than countries like Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and even some European nations.
In an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday, Oketie underscored the detrimental impact of plastic pollution on the environment, drawing attention to its contribution to climate change and various environmental emissions.
He commended the Lagos State Government’s proactive step in banning single-use plastic, calling it a necessary measure to tackle the waste crisis.
He said, “Lagos State generated more plastic than entire countries like Ghana, Kenya, Senegal and some European countries.
“You can imagine the population of Lagos, 20 to 21 million people, so there is a lot of demand for resources and things like plastic.
“So Lagos is under a lot of pressure to manage plastic waste and it is on that ground they took that step to ban single-use plastic.
“Plastic is a huge threat to the environment in terms of climate change, in terms of emissions to the environment, so Lagos State Government has taken a good step.
“Imagine Lagos State Government spending billions to clear plastic from our drainage; this could have been used on other things.”
