Int’l partners, forum laud Ex-NPHCDA boss over polio eradication

International Health Organisations and stakeholders working in the health sector of Nigeria have commended the immediate past executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, for his efforts in strengthening primary health care (PHC), wild polio virus eradication and COVID-19 response in the country.

They gave the commendation in Abuja during the valedictory session in honour of Dr Shuaib organised by the forum of Executive Secretaries of State Primary Healthcare Development Agencies/Boards (SPHCDA/B).

The organisations range from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), US-CDC, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), USAID, World Bank, AFENET and health experts, among others.

WHO country representative, Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo, said it was commendable that Nigeria was certified wild polio virus free during the tenure of Faisal Shuaib, adding that he was also proud of his contribution to immunisation, and strengthening the primary healthcare system of the country.

UNICEF Chief of Health, Dr Eduardo Celades, extolled Shuaib’s leadership qualities and vision, saying he successfully drove changes such as revitalisation of PHCs, and introduction of rotavirus and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in the country.

The Director Disease Control and Immunisation NPHCDA, Dr Bassey Okposen, said as a result of Shuaib’s efforts, 70 per cent of eligible persons in Nigeria are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. He added that the country has thus achieved its set target for vaccination.

Chairman Forum of Executive Secretaries of State Primary Healthcare Development Agencies/Boards (SPHCDA/B) said Shuaib’s leadership style had been characterised by inclusivity, transparency and a genuine commitment to collaboration.

Reacting, Dr Shuaib enjoined health stakeholders to maintain the momentum, and continue to prioritise and address the needs of the people and urged them to extend the same support and dedication to his successor.
