FG postpones inauguration of federal tertiary institutions’ governing councils

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the postponement of the inauguration and retreat for pro-chancellors, chairmen and members of governing councils of federal tertiary institutions, earlier scheduled for Thursday, 30th  and Friday, 31st May 2024.

The Director of Press & PR, Folasade Boriowo, in a statement said: “This is as a result of the presidential directive, as conveyed by the State House Press Release dated 23rd May 2024, for a comprehensive review of the membership of the Governing Councils of Federal Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.”

She said further updates would be communicated in due course while calling for their understanding and cooperation.

Daily Trust reports that the ministry had released the list of the governing council members about two weeks ago after one year of putting the activities of the councils on hold.

The list was released after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had threatened to go on strike.

However, the list was rejected in some quarters with some saying it lacks federal character in the composition while others said the previous councils should be returned to finish their tenure as stipulated in the act.

The development led to the withdrawal of the list by the presidency which asked for a review.
