By Rasaq Ibrahim, Ado-Ekiti

The Ekiti State Traditional Council of Rulers has called for calm and patience among monarchs and communities in the state over alleged plan to cede land to herdsmen as grazing reserves.

The Council Chairman and Alawe of Ilawe, Oba Adebanji Alabi, debunked insinuation in some quarters that the government was planning to give land to herdsmen.

Oba Alabi was reacting to a letter written by 81 majority Obas to Governor Kayode Fayemi, cautioning him to jettison proposed plan of ceding land to herdsmen for ranching.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday by his media adviser, Ajibade Olubunmi, Oba Alabi said Governor Fayemi has no plan to cede land to any group of people for ranching.

He said there was no need for tension on ranching, “as the governor has made it clear that no part of our land will be ceded.”

The monarch said information from the government showed that the news about plan to cede land for ranching was meant to cause disaffection among the citizens.

According to the first-class monarch, the Council of Traditional Rulers at its next meeting this month will be briefed by top government officials on the state’s policy on animal husbandry.

He appealed to traditional rulers and communities to remain calm.
