EFCC fails to produce Emefiele as court shifts case to Nov 8

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday failed to produce former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, in court over the N9.6 billion corruption charges.

The presiding judge in the FCT High Court, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi had on November 2 ordered the EFCC to produce Emefiele in the court.

The judge on Monday made a fresh order for the EFCC to comply with his earlier order for Emefiele’s release.

The EFCC had claimed that there had been misinterpretations of the order.

But Justice Adeniyi warned that Emefiele must be produced on November 8 for a hearing of his bail application.

At the resumed hearing of his fundamental rights enforcement suit, Emefiele through his counsel, Mathew Burkaa (SAN) complained that the anti-graft agency did not obey the lawful clear order issued on November 2.

He drew the attention of Justice Adeniyi to the fact that his client had spent 149 days in the custody of the federal government agencies since June 10 when he was first arrested by the operatives of the Department of the State Services (DSS).

Upon being called for explanations on why the court order was not obeyed, EFCC lawyer, Farouk Abdallah admitted that his client was actually served with the release order.

He, however, hinted that the order could not be executed due to some ‘slight confusion’ observed therein.

Emefiele is facing charges bordering on money laundering and procurement breaches in a separate court.
