Alleged N10bn graft: Ex-Kwara gov arraigned, granted bail

The Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin has granted bail to a former governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, over alleged misappropriation of N10 billion while in office.

The governor is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) over a 12-count charge bordering on money laundering.

Also joined in the suit as second defendant is then state’s commissioner for Finance, Demola Banu, who served under Ahmed’s administration.

Delivering her ruling, Justice Evelyn Anyadike gave an order for him (Ahmed) to deposit N50m with the registry of the court which she said will be forfeited to the federal government if he fails to honour the terms of the bail.

Ahmed was also told to provide two sureties; one of whom must show evidence of land ownership in Ilọrin, deposits his international passports and must require the leave of the court to travel out of the country.

The former governor is to be remanded in the EFCC custody pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

The court granted an accelerated hearing of the matter and adjourned to April 29 and 30, 2024.
