Police arrest, arraign Enugu masquerader over assault in viral video

The Enugu State Police Command says its operatives in Nsukka have arrested a masquerade, popularly called Oriokpa, who recently assaulted a woman in a viral video.

DAILY POST recalls that a female nurse, Miss Ogbonna, who was heading to duty call, was, earlier in the month, beaten to a pulp by a horde of masquerades at the University of Nigeria town of Nsukka.

A video clip from the incident had trended across all social media platforms in the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Enugu police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, the command said that the masquerader, identified as Ugwuoke Ebube, was arrested and arraigned.

He, however, stated that the suspect was granted bail.

According to him, the arrest followed an assault on another victim at the Ugwuoye junction in the Nsukka area of the state.

Part of the statement reads, “An investigation into the case suggests that the suspect was part of a group of masqueraders that similarly assaulted a female nurse riding a motorcycle, as captured in a viral video in April 2024.

“He was today, May 22, 2024, arraigned in the Nsukka Magistrate Court of Enugu State, Nigeria, but was granted bail by the court.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+), while condemning the act, has warned those intending to hide under the guise of culturally celebrating masquerades to commit such criminal acts of assault against fellow citizens to desist forthwith”.
