Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), has suspended its proposed increase in undergraduate school fees for the 2026/2027 academic session, following concerns raised by students.
The vice-chancellor, Isaac Itodo, announced the decision in a statement issued on Monday in Makurdi, saying the fees would remain unchanged for the session.
He said the decision followed consultations with relevant university bodies and consideration of students’ concerns about the economic challenges facing their families.
“I recognise the economic realities confronting our university and the difficult decisions required to sustain its operations and development.
“However, I also understand the sacrifices parents and guardians make to keep their children in school,” he said.
Mr Itodo said the university remained committed to sustaining its development while managing available resources prudently.
He said the university wanted to resume academic activities promptly to recover time lost to strikes and other delays and ensure the session progressed sufficiently before the 2027 general elections.
He stressed the need to protect the academic calendar and prevent further disruptions to students’ academic progress.
The vice-chancellor, however, expressed disappointment over what he described as confrontational approaches adopted by some students, including the circulation of flyers bearing the inscription, “ITODO MUST GO”.
He urged students to express their grievances responsibly, saying criticism was welcome but violence, intimidation and actions capable of disrupting academic activities would not be tolerated.
“You have every right to question decisions and express your concerns, but I urge you to do so responsibly.
“Criticism is welcome; violence, intimidation and actions that threaten our University’s peace and reputation are not,” he said.
Mr Itodo urged students not to allow themselves to be used to disrupt academic activities, noting that established channels were available to address their concerns.
He reaffirmed his commitment to providing quality education and developing the university, urging students to focus on their education and future.
“You have spoken, and I have listened. Undergraduate school fees remain unchanged. Welcome back to campus, my dear children,” he said.
He wished the students a successful academic session and prayed for God’s continued guidance and blessings on the university.
