Cryptocurrency ban: Senate summons CBN Governor, DG of SEC

Following the ban on Cryptocurrency by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, the National Assembly has asked its Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, ICT and Cybercrimes and Capital Market, to invite the Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, to explain the uncertainties regarding the ban.

Director-General of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Lamido Yuguda, is also asked to appear before the committee.

The Senate came to this conclusion following the motion, titled; ”CBN’s decision to stop Financial Institutions from transacting in Cryptocurrencies and matters arising therefrom”.

This motion was sponsored by Senator Istifanus Dung Gyang, from Plateau North and Senator Adetokunbo Mukhail Abiru from Lagos East.

The upper-chamber says it’s in a high spirit that the briefing information will help the Senate make an informed decision on the threats and opportunities cryptocurrency pose to the nation’s economy and security.
