The police command in Benue has confirmed the abduction of John Otache, the parish priest of St. Margaret’s Parish, Ajegbe-Awume, in Ohimini Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson, Aondogu Orchia, confirmed the abduction on Friday, saying the command had launched an investigation and was working to rescue the priest.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo said in a statement signed by its chancellor, Joseph Itodo, that Otache was abducted on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the priest was returning home from Otukpo when he encountered his abductors along the Otobi Amejo-Ajegbe Road in Ohimini.
The diocese expressed sadness over the incident, saying the Bishop of Otukpo, Michael Apochi, was pained by the development.
It called on priests, religious members, the laity and other well-meaning individuals to pray for the priest’s safe and speedy release.
The diocese also urged prayers for other people held captive by kidnappers across the country, expressing hope for their safe return.
