Trump Endorses TikTok Sale to Musk, Ellison; Seeks 50% Share for US

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison as potential buyers of TikTok, following the app’s recent ban in the United States over national security concerns.

The ban, which came into effect on Sunday, temporarily shut down the popular social media platform, leaving over 170 million American users without access. As part of the enforcement, TikTok was also removed from Apple and Google app stores.

On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order delaying the ban for 75 days, effectively allowing TikTok to resume operations while exploring solutions.

Speaking to reporters after signing the order, Trump proposed that the U.S. government receive 50% of any proceeds from the app’s sale as part of a joint business deal.

“I have met with the owners of TikTok, the big owners. So, what I am thinking about saying to somebody is ‘buy it and give half to the United States of America,’” Trump said.

He also issued a stern warning to China against interfering in the sale, threatening tariffs of up to 100% if Beijing obstructed the process.

When asked about Musk as a potential buyer, Trump expressed approval and also mentioned Ellison as a candidate.

“I would be if he [Musk] wanted to buy it. I’d like Larry to buy it, too. I have the right to make a deal,” he stated.

Trump underscored the app’s value tied to its approval in the U.S., asserting, “TikTok is worthless if it doesn’t get a U.S. permit. With a permit, it’s worth like a trillion dollars.

“So what I’m thinking about saying to somebody is ‘buy it and give half to the United States of America, and we’ll give you a permit and you’ll have a great partner in the United States.’”

The prospect of Musk or Ellison acquiring TikTok has sparked widespread discussions, as the platform remains at the center of geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China.
