Tension Mounts as Lagos Assembly Tightens Security for Monday Plenary
The Lagos State House of Assembly has heightened security measures ahead of Monday’s plenary, following claims by former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa that he remains the legitimate leader of the House.
Obasa, who was removed on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, continues to reject his ouster. He was replaced by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who has presided over two plenary sessions in his absence.
Speaking to his supporters on Saturday, Obasa insisted that his removal did not follow due process. “I believe strongly I am still the Speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, do it the proper way,” he said, hinting at a possible legal challenge to reclaim his position.
He dismissed the corruption allegations as baseless, questioning claims that N16 billion was used to construct a gate or that Hilux vehicles were purchased at N1 billion each. “I have been a lawmaker for over two decades and the longest-serving in this House. I have not done anything wrong,” he asserted.
To ensure order, the acting Clerk’s office issued a directive on Sunday requiring staff and legislative aides to present valid identification before gaining entry to the Assembly Complex.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has pledged to maintain peace outside the Assembly. Commissioner of Police Ishola Olawale assured that no lawlessness would be tolerated in Lagos, warning against any attempt to disrupt public order.
“There won’t be any breakdown of law and order in Lagos State. My job is to maintain calm outside the Assembly, and I will ensure that happens,” Olawale said.
The police also refuted allegations made by Obasa that over 200 officers invaded his residences during his removal. The CP dismissed the claim as implausible, urging residents to verify the accusation with security personnel at Obasa’s estate.
Amid the ongoing tension, Obasa and members of the Governor’s Advisory Council are reportedly scheduled to meet with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday. Observers are keenly watching how the power struggle unfolds and whether it will impact governance in Lagos State.
