Tinubu Seeks Senate’s Nod To Appoint 11 Supreme Court Justices

President Bola Tinubu has sought the Senate’s confirmation of the 11 Court of Appeal judges recommended for elevation as Supreme Court justices.

Tinubu’s request was contained in a letter addressed to President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, which was read at plenary on Wednesday.

Tinubu in the letter said the request was in pursuant to section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

He listed the judges nominated for confirmation and appointment into the nation’s apex court to include Justices Jummai Sankey, Stephen Adah, Mohammed Idris, Haruna Tsammani, Jamilu Tukur, Abubakar Umar, Chidiebere Uwa, Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, Obande Ogbuinya, Moore Adumein and Habeeb Abiru.

The number of justices at the apex court had dropped to about 10 following the retirement of some justices on the bench. While the constitution recommends a full complement of 21 justices for the Supreme Court, the court has not had its full complement in many years and has continued to be depleted over the years.
