Opposition Parties Slam Buhari Over ‘Only God Can Fix Nigeria’ Remark

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has come under heavy criticism from opposition parties following his statement that Nigerians should turn to God to fix the country’s problems. Buhari made the remark during an All Progressives Congress stakeholders’ meeting in Katsina on Saturday, where he said in Hausa, “Only God who created Nigeria can solve the problems of Nigeria.”

The comment, which has sparked mixed reactions across social media, has been widely interpreted as an admission of failure by the APC-led government to address the nation’s challenges during his eight-year tenure.

Reacting, the New Nigeria People’s Party described Buhari’s statement as a reflection of the APC’s lack of preparedness to govern. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said, “This is an acknowledgment that the APC government has failed Nigerians. For eight years, the country was led without a clear direction, and now the same government is asking citizens to look to God. It’s a confirmation that they have been engaging in trial-and-error governance.”

Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party criticized Buhari’s comment, calling it an indictment of his administration and a subtle vote of no confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s government. The PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, noted that Buhari’s remark highlights the continuation of leadership failure in the country.

“Buhari’s words show that he is aware of the damage caused by his administration, which laid the foundation for the current government’s ineptitude. His statement is not just a reflection of his own failures but also a wake-up call for Nigerians to act decisively in salvaging the nation from further decline,” Osadolor said.

The Labour Party also weighed in, with its National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, saying he was not surprised by Buhari’s comment. Ahanotu stated that Buhari’s tenure was marked by a lack of vision and that the APC has consistently failed to deliver good governance.

“I had no expectations of Buhari, so I’m not surprised that he left office without addressing Nigeria’s fundamental issues. However, this pattern of failure won’t change unless Nigerians give younger, more dynamic leaders a chance. The current administration is simply a continuation of a broken system,” Ahanotu remarked.

The former president’s statement has further fueled public discourse on the state of the nation, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over repeated cycles of leadership that fail to deliver on promises. While Buhari’s supporters argue that his comments reflect humility and an acknowledgment of Nigeria’s complex challenges, critics see it as an abdication of responsibility and a stark reminder of the APC government’s shortcomings.

As opposition parties continue to condemn the remarks, calls for urgent leadership reform and a renewed focus on tackling Nigeria’s socio-economic issues grow louder.
