A 29-year old man, Mr Obodoekwe Christian has been arrested over alleged possession of over 26 Kilogram of Cannabis Sativa, also known as Indian hemp wrapped in 43 parcels along Onitsha-Owerri road, Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The suspect, from Ebonyi State, was arrested by the Naval Patrol Team on May 28, 2021, at Idemili Junction in the area.
Handing over the suspect and exhibits on Thursday to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Naval Out Post base, Lt. Commander O.D Obasooto, on behalf of the Commanding Officer, Naval Outpost Onitsha, Navy Capt. Adekunle Okeniyi, said the suspect was arrested with N108,550, 43 parcels of Cannabis Sativa and other items.
He said, “Mr Obodoekwe Christian Rapulu, 29 years old was arrested by the Naval Patrol Team on 28th May 2021 at about 1500 at Idemili Junction Onitsha Owerri Road in Anambra State.
“The aforementioned, therefore, deduced to be guilty of drug crime. Accordingly, I am directed to respectively hand over the suspect and the exhibits to your command for further interrogation and possible prosecution.
“The following exhibits were found on the suspect during arrest, the sum of N108, 550, 43 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, a small Techno Phone with charger, a Digital Scale for measuring drugs, an Android Techno Phone, Smoking paper, Motorcycle key, and lighter.”
Receiving the suspect and exhibits on behalf of Commander NDLEA, Mr Misbahu Mohammed, Officer in charge of Operations Team, Mr. Fidelis Erhi said the quantity of Cannabis Sativa found in the suspect possession was capable of rendering over 5000 persons in the state insane.
He lauded the synergy between both agencies in the maintenance of law and order, warning youths in the state to desist from the consumption of such illicit substances.
Before receiving the suspects and the exhibits, the NDLEA and the Navy conducted a test of the substance with what they called “United Nations standard testing kits with reagents” for confirmation of the substance to be Cannabis Sativa, weighing 26 Kilogram in 43 parcels.
The suspect however confessed he was taking the substance to Oba when he was arrested by the Naval Patrol Team.
