The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has asked Lagosians to treat their waste as wealth as it launched its waste App dubbed PAKAM.

Unveiling the App in their office, LAWMA Managing Director, Ibrahim Adejuwon Odumboni asked the public to learn how to segregate and sort their waste from source, adding with the launch of PAKAM App and the unveiling of over 47 Recyclers, residents are in for a good time as every waste they generate and sort out properly will attract payment from the Recyclers who will turn them to finished goods such as bags, slippers etc.

He said the agency is encouraging residents with the monthly raffle draw to treat their waste as gold adding that the initial draw recorded over 77,000 entries but 100 were chosen randomly from all the entries. He said the idea is to have financial inclusion, help the public create wealth through the waste they generate while recyclers serve as off takers.

He said they plan to pick 10 residents from each of the 57 Local Government Areas.

Also speaking, Chairman, Lagos Recycling Association, Femi Idowu Adegoke said: “PAKAM is avenue to unlock the value in our waste , turning trash into cash we see endless possibilities financial inclusion. It is about attitudinal and behavioural change. If you pick up the App, you can invite us and we come weigh your waste and pay you for it.

“PAKAM is about making money from waste. The App selects people randomly and produces winners.”

He said what one needs is an android phone and in any case if one doesn’t have it, an ordinary phone can do as long as it can send test and can receive USSD.

One of the winners, Comfort Gill who resides in Festac Town said she made N46, 000 last week from her waste aside the money she won from PAKAM.

She encouraged other residents to follow suit as it cost nothing but just discipline.

Others are Tolulope Olusopo, Morenkeji Fagbemi etc.

Managing Director of LAWMA said the idea of Recycling is for sustainability and to get our drainages, shorelines and environment to be free of waste while the public will reap the economic gain.
