IMN raises the alarm over El-Zakzaky’s, wife’s health

By Gbenga Omokhunu, Abuja

MEMBERS of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) yesterday raised the alarm over the deteriorating health condition of their leader, Shaikh El-Zakzaky and his wife, Malama Zeenat Ibraheem.

IMN said the duo that need urgent medical attention may die in detention if the government does not act swiftly.

The Kaduna State Government charged El-Zakzaky and his wife with eight counts bordering on culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace.

El-Zakzaky has been in prison since 2015 when the Nigerian army killed hundreds of his supporters near his home in Zaria.

The two have remained in detention despite several court orders calling for their release.

The government accused the IMN of not recognising the Nigerian constitution and authority.

His prolonged detention has fueled several protests by members of the Shiite movement in many Nigerian cities.

Briefing reporters in Abuja as part of activities to mark the 2000 days in detention of El-Zakzaky and his wife, a top member of the IMN, Prof. Shahu Maigandi, said there are still bullets in El-Zakzaky’s body.

Maigandi vowed that protests will continue, especially in Abuja, until El-Zakzaky and his wife are released unconditionally.

He disclosed that about 78 protesters have so far been killed in Abuja during their daily protests.

“Today, 3rd June, 2021, marks 2000 days of illegal detention of Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife. Since the infamous Zaria-massacre in the year 2015, the duo have been, and are still being detained, despite the several court orders granting their freedom.”
