Heavy rain renders many homeless in Ekiti

On Friday, a rainstorm damaged scores of buildings in the Oke-Ako community of Ekiti State’s Ikole Local Government Area.

The two-hour-long rainstorm also wrecked some of the community’s electricity infrastructure, leaving inhabitants in the dark.

In response to the news, the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, expressed condolences to inhabitants of the community and assured victims of government assistance to help them recover from the disaster.

Oyebanji, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Monisade Afuye, during an on-the-spot assessment of the level of the havoc wreaked on the town a day after the downpour, also urged residents of the community to embrace tree-planting, assuring them that the present administration is ready to support interested individuals to go into tree planting.

Afuye, in a statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Deputy Governor, Victor Ogunje, said the programmes would soon be rolled out to safeguard the environment and minimise havoc being wreaked by rainstorms.
