Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint in Imo, Injure 2 Officers

Unknown gunmen struck terror in Imo State today as they opened fire on a police checkpoint along the Owerri-Okigwe road, leaving two officers and a civilian injured. The incident occurred at approximately 06:25 am in Akabo, Ikeduru Council Area, sending shockwaves through the community.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing ordeal, describing how the assailants, still unidentified, unleashed a barrage of gunfire on the unsuspecting officers and civilians. A viral video captured the aftermath, showing the grim scene of two uniformed police officers lying wounded on the ground, alongside another victim inside a nearby house.

Reports indicate that the gunmen, traveling in a vehicle, fired indiscriminately, leaving chaos and panic in their wake. In addition to targeting the police officers at the security checkpoint, they also aimed at a civilian inside a residence, resulting in multiple casualties.

Witnesses reported scenes of residents fleeing for safety, with shop owners hastily closing their businesses amid the chaos and uncertainty. One resident, speaking anonymously due to security concerns, expressed the prevailing sense of fear and apprehension gripping the area. “We are running. Nobody knows what is next. So we have to take cover for the moment until everything is calm. The best thing is to close your shop at the moment,” the resident said.
