Delta youths attack lawmaker

Youths at Ogharafe community in Ethiope West Local Government of Delta State have burnt houses and belongings worth millions of Naira, over leadership tussle.

The Nation gathered that the crisis began on Sunday after a faction opposed to an elongation of the tenure of the current community youth wing leadership, attacked the member representing Ethiope West Constituency in the House of Assembly, Eriatakhe Ibori-Suenu, who was hosting a peace meeting at Otefe-Oghara.

The youth allegedly stormed the meeting venue and destroyed cars. They reportedly injured two persons, while the lawmaker escaped being lynched.

It was learnt that about 30 youths allegedly shot into the air and barricaded streets in the community.

The Nation gathered that the crisis worsened on Monday night when a faction of the youth attacked community leaders accused of being loyal to the other faction. The youth burnt their houses and belongings.

An aide to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Duncan Egwere, said his house and car were torched on Tuesday night.

Another community leader, Lucky Akoh Atuma, whose houses and cars were also burnt, accused the daughter of a prominent leader of being behind the crisis.

He said: “She wants to impose her relative on us after his tenure has ended. Look at what they have done to my houses and cars.”

The Nation learnt that students of the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara have fled the community following the mayhem.

Ibori-Suenu urged her supporters not to carry out reprisal.

She enjoined security operatives to arrest the hoodlums who attacked her.
