Cholera outbreak hits Ogun LG, govt alerts residents

Ogun State Government on Sunday raised the alarm over the outbreak of cholera in Ijebu North Local Government Area of the State.

The Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Health, Dr Tomi Coker, made this known in a statement.

Coker said, “There is an outbreak of cholera (Aarun òní gbá méjì) in the Ijebu North Local Government area of Ogun State.”

According to her, cholera usually occurs during rainy seasons and may also be associated with poor environmental and personal hygiene.

The disease, she said, presents with stooling with or without vomiting leading to dehydration.

The former health commissioner stated that “Cholera can result to death if the severe dehydration is not promptly corrected.”

She urged Ogun residents to report all cases of stooling with or without vomiting to government health facilities “and notify the LGA DSNO (08069788449).”

The Special Adviser charged the people to ensure proper personal and environmental hygiene, asking them to wash their hands frequently (before and after using the toilet or eating).

“Use water from clean sources, treat water before use and boil before drinking. Wash and cook food thoroughly before eating. Prevent open defecation,” she advised.

She implored people to watch the food and water they consume, adding that Cholera is caused by water or food contaminated with faeces.
