ASUU gives Gombe Varsity 14 days to address welfare issues

The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) Gombe State University chapter, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the management of the institution over unresolved pressing issues affecting its members.

In a resolution after a congress meeting, ASUU Chairman at the university, Dr Suleiman Salihu Jauro, said the union arrived at the decision after deliberating extensively on issues affecting the well-being of its members.

He said the congress had frowned at the failure of the university administration to address the issues, which according to him is affecting the morale of the academic staff.

He lamented that the morale of the staff had been on the decline due to failure to address the welfare issues of staff amidst the socio-economic challenges in the country.

Dr Jauro outlined some of the issues as: “Non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for over eight academic sessions, from 2015/2016 session to date. Non-payment of promotions arrears of 2020, 2021 and 2022 as well as non-implementation of 2023 promotion for academic staff and professorial cadre.

“Others are: non-implementation of new salary table for academic staff, non-implementation and non-payment of arrears of consequential adjustment in minimum wage to N30,000 effective from April 2019 among others.”

The ASUU chairman added that the congress unanimously resolved to give the university management two weeks, from March 28, to address the listed issues.

He added that if the management failed to address the issues at the expiration of the ultimatum, “the union will not hesitate to consider other legitimate options available to pursue its demand.”
