Abdulsalami to Nigerians: Give peace a chance

Former Head of State and Chairman, National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar has sued for peace over the recent happenings of ethnic attacks across the country.

Just as he tasks the new Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police to rise to the demands of the moment to design best strategies to end the tragic war ongoing in the country.

Abdulsalami who expressed dismay over the tension growing in the country in the past two weeks lamented that if care is not taken the embers of disunity, anarchy and disintegration that is spreading fast across the nation will lead the nation to the point of no return.

Speaking to newsmen in his Uphill residence in Minna, the Chairman of the National Peace Committee called for calm urging everyone to join hands together in a bid to resolve the ongoing challenges which would go a long way in keeping the country united.

“It is true that we are all in a state of fear and collective anxiety. However, the last thing we need is for the enemy to sense a lack of unity on our part or a break in our ranks.

“We, at the National Peace Committee wish to add our voice to the voices of millions of Nigerians calling for calm in these difficult times.

“These times demands that we all join hands together to resolve put challenges so as to keep our country united. We do not have the luxury of trading blames”, he said.

Abdulsalami further appealed to the people who are pained with the on goings in the country to remain resilient and patient adding that there is the need for everyone to rally together, make sacrifices and remain vigilant.

The former Head of State admonished state governors to sheathe their sword, time down their rhetoric and take full responsibility for managing the divergent voices and frustrations within their states.

He then urged the traditional institutions, religious leaders and NGOs to mobilize Nigerians and sensitize them on the need to live in peace with each other.

Abdulsalami commended President Buhari for exploring all measures at ensuring that tensions are lowered.
