1 killed as security operatives invade Enugu community, raze houses

One person was confirmed dead on Saturday when combined security operatives invaded Igga, a community in the Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu State.

Sources told Daily Trust on Sunday that the security operatives, comprising personnel of the Nigerian Army and police invaded the community around 10pm, burning houses and shooting sporadically.

Festus Okonkwo, a councillor in the area, said “Last night, army and police invaded Igga community and burnt many houses and in the process one of us, Richard Okoye died.”

Another indigene of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Daily Trust that the villagers believed the invasion of the community by the security operatives might be connected to the killing of three persons at a farm settlement close to the community.

He said the three persons including a police officer, were killed on Friday by gunmen, suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network, the militant wing of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

When contacted, the police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, said the community members were trying to twist what happened.

The PPRO, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, promised to issue a statement to detail what happened in the community.

Also, the spokesperson of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Jonah Unuakhalu, promised to revert back to our reporter with details. But he was yet to do so as of the time of this report.
