One fisherman killed, 4 others abducted off Bayelsa coast
Gunmen suspected to be sea pirates have ambushed some fishermen off the Atlantic coast of Brass in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, killing one and kidnapping four others.
The gunmen also took their victims’ engines and fishing gear.
The incident reportedly occurred over the weekend in a coastal hamlet populated by fishermen.
Two of the fishermen were injured during the incident, according to sources but one died before receiving medical assistance.
The gunmen kidnapped four more people.
Muhammed Musa, Spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, said he had yet to be briefed on the incident.
Meanwhile, Hanson Alabo-Karika, the Chairman of Brass Local Government Council, has condemned the attack and kidnapping of the fishermen.
Alabo-Karika said the unjustified and inhumane conduct that killed one person should not go unpunished, urging security officers to investigate, arrest, and convict everyone engaged in the crime as soon as possible.
He stated that misguided people would not be allowed to disrupt the council’s current calm, which is the result of purposeful tactics implemented by Governor Douye Diri-led administration.
