Man Jailed 9 Years After Attempt To Flee Court, Deserting Pregnant Lady

Mallam Zakaria, a 31-year-old man who lives in Adamawa, has been jailed for nine-year after an attempt to elope a chief magistrate’s court following a previous two-year sentence for abandoning a woman whom he impregnated.

Maryam Usman, a native of Anguwan Yungur, on June 16, 2021, lodged a complaint at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Girei.

In her report, Zakaria had begun to avoid her upon hearing that she was pregnant.

She added that Zakaria colluded with the operator of a pharmacy, Sunday Assoga, to terminate the pregnancy, which later turned out futile.

Zakaria, during detention, admitted to the crime and was charged to court on June 18, 2021.

The Magistrate, Adamu Abdulrazak, sentenced Zakaria to two-year imprisonment, with an option of a fine of N150,000.

Shortly after his sentence, Zakaria fled after taking an excuse to urinate. He was later caught with the help of pedestrians around the government house and an additional seven years for attempted elopement was added to his sentence and was denied an option of fine.
