Throwback: A Peep Into Orisabunmi’s Iconic Movie Roles (Videos)

The Yoruba sector of Nollywood was on Wednesday, January 6, thrown into a mourning session after the death of veteran actress Folake Aremu, popularly known as ‘Orishabunmi’ was announced.

Orisabunmi, popularly known for the role of an Ifa priestess with magical powers and some other mysterious manifestations died on Tuesday, after a brief illness at the age of 61.

The news of her death was confirmed in a statement by the President of the Theatre Arts And Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) Bolaji Amusan, aka Mr Latin, who described her as “a priceless jewel, a very rare gem in the Nigerian film industry.”

Orisabunmi, known for perfect interpretation of roles, became a household name following her role in “Arelu”.

Arelu

Arelu is a classic Yoruba movie written and produced by Jimoh Aliu, her ex-husband who died in September 2020. The Yoruba television series of the mid-80s starred Jimoh Aliu (Aworo), Fadeyi Oloro, Orisabunmi, and a host of others. In Lagos, it was aired on NTA 7 between 6 -7 pm.

The late actress’ role as ‘Orisabunmi’ in “Arelu” made her a household name.

“Oluwerimagboojo”

Omo Oluweri reveals the war between humans and the marine goddess. She played the role of Asabi in the epic movie which also stars veterans like Baba Wande, Iya Awero, Baba Suwe, Omoladun, Orisabunmi, Saheed Balogun, Faithia Balogun, Iya mi Leko, Iya Rainbow, Yomi Ogunmola, Yemi Elebuubon, Laide Bakare, Yomi Fashlanso, and others.

“Ayanmo Eda”

Orisabunmi in this classic movie played the role of a priestess. The plot sees a madman pay Odeyemi a visit, he was warned beforehand not to disregard but accept the strange visitor and he complied. During this visit, the supposed madman revealed a secret to him unknown to him that his wives were eavesdropping. “Ayanmo Eda” stars veterans like Sikira Adeshina, Babatunde Omidina, Yinka Quadri, Serifat Ilerika, Folake Aremu
