Davido Takes Sophia Momodu to Court Over Custody Dispute

In a recent legal move, Afrobeats star David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has initiated court proceedings against his former partner, Sophia Momodu, concerning the custody of their daughter, Imade.

The case was filed at the Lagos State High Court on April 17, 2024, by Davido’s legal team, led by Dr. Olaniyi Arije and Okey Barrah. In the court documents, Davido is seeking joint custody of Imade and unrestricted access to his daughter. The case, identified by the suit number LD/1587PMC/2024, lists David Adedeji Adeleke as the applicant and Sophia Momodu as the sole respondent.

Davido, in his affidavit consisting of 44 paragraphs, recounted his relationship with Momodu, which resulted in the birth of Imade on May 14, 2015. He noted that although their romantic relationship ended years ago, they had agreed to co-parent their daughter.

The musician emphasized his financial contributions towards Imade’s upbringing, including covering all her educational expenses and the rent for Momodu’s residence. Furthermore, out of his love for Imade, Davido purchased a ₦200 million apartment in a gated community in Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos, equipped with amenities such as a swimming pool and 24-hour utilities, an offer Momodu rejected. Instead, she insisted on an annual rent payment of ₦5 million for a different residence.

To cater to Imade’s transportation needs, Davido also bought a Range Rover SUV for Momodu and their daughter. However, after learning from Imade’s school that she had been absent for two weeks, Davido discovered that Momodu had not informed him about the vehicle’s poor condition. In response, he provided another vehicle, a Highlander SUV, and gave Momodu ₦5.8 million for the Range Rover’s repairs.

Davido stated that he has consistently ensured Imade’s well-being by covering living expenses, nanny fees, medical and healthcare costs, insurance, and international travel expenses. Despite these efforts, he claimed that Momodu has continued to make unreasonable demands, including a $800 monthly salary for a nanny and a lump sum payment of $19,600 per year.

The singer expressed his frustration, alleging that despite his efforts to provide for their daughter, Momodu has treated him with undue cruelty, causing him significant distress.
