Reps group renews call for Damagun’s ouster

A coalition of members of the House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has renewed their call for the removal of the party’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.

The coalition, led by Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo), earlier called for the sack of Damagum before the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting last month. But the NEC had resolved to shelve the issue of the party’s leadership until August, thereby extending Damagum’s term as the acting chairman.

But addressing a press conference in Abuja yesterday, Ugochinyere said leaders of the party must take action to oust Damagum out of office before it leads to the collapse of the party, reiterating the allegation that the chairman was acting out a script to destroy the party and render it incapable of contesting the 2027 elections.

He alleged that Damagum has gone against the tenets of the agreement reached at the last NEC meeting of the party, which allowed him to remain in office until August by obtaining a court injunction against his removal.

He further alleged that the PDP, under Damagun, has gone to court to file a suit opposing the prayers to declare the seats of the 27 lawmakers from Rivers State who defected to the APC vacant, on the grounds that it is only the party that can determine who its members are.

Neither Damagum nor the party’s National Working Committee has responded to the latest call and allegation as efforts to get their reaction were not successful as of the time of filing this report.
