The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a man, Manaseh Jatau, over the death of his girlfriend, Rebecca Jeremiah, 35.
The police public relations officer (PPRO), DSP Mansir Hassan, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
Hassan said the deceased, a resident of the Karatudu area, Kaduna, was found dead along Mai Angwa Street, Romi, at about 7:00 a.m. on September 5.
He said the lifeless body of the woman was discovered with cotton wool stuffed in her nostrils.
According to him, police detectives from the Romi Outstation immediately visited the scene and evacuated the victim to St. Gerald Hospital, Kakuri, Kaduna, where a medical doctor confirmed her death.
The command’s spokesperson said the corpse had been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
He said preliminary investigation revealed that Jatau was the last person to have called the deceased to meet him at Ebano Joint, Romi.
The PPRO said the suspect was subsequently traced and arrested at his place of work, Tomato Jos Company, Maraban Jos Area, Kaduna.
Hassan said during interrogation, the suspect confessed to having engaged the deceased in a fight in his room over a phone call from another woman, which allegedly resulted in her death.
He said the suspect further confessed to dumping the body in an open field close to his residence in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The PPRO said the suspect remained in police custody while the investigation into the case continued.
He added that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna, CP Rabiu Muhammad, condemned all acts of violence and urged members of the public to embrace peaceful resolution of disputes.
Muhammad also reassured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and bringing perpetrators of crime to book.
