Plateau Assembly resumes plenary after two-month closure

Members of the Plateau State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, held their plenary after two months closure of the Assembly complex by the police.

The resumption of the Assembly members came barely 24 hours after  Caleb Mutfwang succeeded  Simon Lalong as the new governor of the state.

It was learnt that the embattled Speaker of the House, Ayuba Abok, presided over Tuesday’s plenary.

The lawmaker representing Riyom State Constituency, Timothy Dantong, confirmed the development to The PUNCH in Jos on Tuesday.

Dantong said, “Yes, it’s true that we held our plenary today at the Plateau Assembly complex without any problem after the police denied us the rights for two months.

“The police did not stop us from conducting our plenary. About 19 lawmakers attended the plenary with Speaker Abok Ayuba presiding. Only Yakubu Sanda and a few others did not attend.

“We deliberated on the recent attacks in Mangu LGA and also passed a motion directing the security agents in the state to enforce the directive of the court restoring the Chairman of Langtang North LGA, Joshua Ubandoma back to his position. “

The PUNCH had reported that for more than one month, the Plateau State House of Assembly had remained under lock and key at the instance of the police high command whose personnel manned the Assembly complex daily.

The police said it sealed the Assembly complex to forestall a breakdown of law and order in the wake of the leadership crisis rocking the Assembly.

The lawmaker representing Jos East Constituency, Ayuba Abok, and his counterpart from Pengana Constituency, Yakubu Sanda, had been engaged in a legal battle over the seat of the Assembly Speaker.

When our correspondent visited the Assembly complex, located along John Samci Street in Jos around 5 pm on Tuesday,  policemen were seen still keeping watch over the facility.
